Algae clean-up crews for freshwater aquariums help cut down on manual maintenance by eating normal algae growth. While it’s best to fix any underlying causes of excess algae, a balanced crew of cleaner fish, snails, and shrimp makes keeping your tank clear much easier.

All of our fish go through a 14+ day holding period with expert pretreatment and monitoring to ensure they arrive healthy. Our shrimp spend 30+ days in quarantine to guarantee they’re disease-free before shipping.

Fish Options (pick one group):

  • Panda Garra (2): Black-and-white striped grazers that scrape algae off rocks and glass.
  • Doctor Fish (Garra rufa) (3): Active nibblers that feed on soft algae. Closely related to Panda Garra in their algae control. 
  • Otocinclus (3): Small, gentle algae eaters best kept in groups to clear green spot and soft algae.
  • Siamese Algae Eaters (3): Larger fish that consume a wide range of algae without harming plants. Great for string algae or hair algae.

Snail Options:

  • Nerite Snails (3 or 6 pack): Hardy snails that eat film and string algae and won’t overpopulate in freshwater.

Shrimp Options:

  • Amano Shrimp (5 or 10 pack): Robust shrimp famous for devouring hair and soft algae. Grow large making them safe for community aquariums.

My veterinarian recommended the red Kong as a chew toy. I’d been buying my 13 lb, now 7 yrs old dachshund the flavored nylabone chew toy products “for aggressive chewers” since he was about a year old. He loves them and would chew them daily. All seemed well. On his last checkup the veterinarian even said that his mouth looked good, but we both could see that there was a brown tartar buildup on his back teeth. Since our veterinarian’s practice has one veterinarian who has dental training, I decided to arrange for a teeth cleaning for my dog. Unfortunately, although none of us expected it, once the tartar was removed from the back teeth it was clear that the teeth had cracks. One large tooth was even chipped down to where we could see the pulp! (Yes, I did note that he occasionally would suddenly squeal when chewing his nylabone, but I thought it was because he’d hit one of the sharp points on a well-chewed nylabone.) The vet recommended that two of the teeth be removed while the dog was still asleep. Then he recommended the red Kong chews for him and said that he would never recommend the nylabone for any dog. They are just too hard and he’s seen too many dogs (of all sizes) end up with cracked and chipped teeth that he (the vet) thinks could have been avoided. He recommended the red Kong for my small dog. The black Kong chew toys are harder and more suited for larger breed aggressive chewers. So far my dachshund is satisfied with chewing the Kong, so that’s what I’ll be buying from now on.
